Cannes Film Festival 2016: Li Bingbing, Gong Li, Liu Yifei, Ni Ni costume surprises
This year's 69th Cannes Film Festival 2016 opens on 11 May 2016 in France. (12 May 2016 Asian time)
Chinese stars attending include Li Bingbing, Gong Li, Crystal Liu Yifei, Jing Boran's girlfriend Ni Ni, Huang Lu and many others. Noticeably absent this year is Fan Bingbing, and her arch rival, Viann Zhang Xinyu.
Li Bingbing and Gong Li are among the 2 bigger stars given the VIP treatment and more airtime on the red carpet.
Korean director Park Chan-wook, who is looking to take home his third award from the event, is among the big names in the business who are present.
The event opened with the return of an old maestro, Woody Allen, with the light-hearted "Cafe Society."
George Miller, the director of last year's box office smash, "Mad Max: Fury Road," is leading the festival jury this year.
Trying to impress that panel is Korean director Park Chan-wook, who is looking to complete a hat trick of Cannes awards this year, with his latest period piece, "The Handmaiden," in competition for one of the prizes.
He won the Grand Prix for the revenge-thriller "Oldboy" in 2004 and the Jury Prize for the vampire horror-thriller "Thirst" in 2009.
But Park has never won the coveted Palme d'Or, the festival's top prize.
Off the red carpet, the atmosphere has been different this year.
With the terror attacks in Europe over the last year, the event has opened amid a backdrop of heightened security.
The French police staged a full terror attack drill last month, and two evacuation drills were held on Tuesday as well.
