First hints of Avatar holograms

The next generation of augmented reality technology may no longer be confined to your smartphone screens.

Researches at Korea's KAIST announced that they've come up with a technology that not only allows avatars, or virtual representations of real people, to imitate users' movements but also calculate surrounding spaces and predict next moves.

In other words, the day of teleconference meetings with avatar holograms and real people may be closer than expected.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.

Local researchers unveiled a technology that enables users of virtual reality devices to communicate with other people's avatars. "The technology enables the avatars to transport the user's movements in a three-dimensional, augmented-reality space."
When this man sits down on a high stool, his avatar mimics the sitting position on another chair... though the virtual object's smaller and lower than the real stool the man actually sat on.

3d avatars

The technology enables the avatar to perform a sitting position just as its user would have,... by calculating and anticipating what an object looks like, what purpose it serves, and what poses the user is most likely to perform around or with it,... all based on algorithms.

"Up until now, technologies were based on reading the user's movements only when they touched the surface of a particular object, but not when the user moved around or posed next to the object. So we've focused on creating a spatial map around that object,... to calculate the surrounding space and recreate it in another environment in real-time."

To achieve a more immersive telepresence experience, the researcher says the next step will be to display the avatar of a person through holograms in a room or house and have it interact with a real person through eye contact or even touch.
