Former President SR Nathan passes away at SGH
Former President SR Nathan has suffered a stroke early this morning, 31 July 2016. He is in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
Mr Nathan is 92. PM Lee is currently on a working trip to the USA, and will be attending a state dinner on 2 Aug 2016, at the invitation of US President Obama. PM Lee is saddened to learn of Mr Nathan's stroke and prays for him.
Meantime, President Tony Tan, DPM Teo Chee Hean and other Ministers from the PAP have also sent their well wishes. The Workers' Party and other opposition parties are also sending in their well wishes.
From the recent spate of medical incidents, it is apparent that many from Singapore's first and second generation leadership are ageing.

The Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues are sad to learn of the passing of Mr S R Nathan and would like to convey their condolences to his family. The late Mr Nathan passed away peacefully at Singapore General Hospital on Monday at 9.48 pm. He was 92.
Mr Nathan is survived by his wife Urmila Nandi. They have a daughter, a son, and three grandchildren.
State Funeral Service
The Government has accepted the wishes of the late Mr S R Nathan and his family in making the following funeral arrangements. The Government will provide all the necessary assistance.
As a mark of respect to Mr Nathan, the State flag on all Government buildings will be flown at half-mast from Tuesday, 23 August to Friday, 26 August 2016.
The body of the late Mr Nathan will lie in state at Parliament House from 10.00am on Thursday, 25 August to 12.00pm on Friday, 26 August. The public may pay their last respects at Parliament House from 10.00am to 8.00pm on Thursday, 25 August. On Friday, 26 August, members of the diplomatic corps and other officials may pay their last respects from 9.00am till 12.00pm.
A State Funeral Service will take place from 4.00 pm on Friday, 26 August at the University Cultural Centre (NUS). It will be attended by Mr Nathan’s family, friends and former colleagues, the President, Cabinet Ministers, MPs, civil servants as well as Singaporeans from all walks of life.
The State Funeral Service will be followed by a private cremation at Mandai Crematorium.
Condolence boards will be available at Istana for those who wish to pen tributes to the late Mr Nathan from tomorrow morning at 6am. Condolence books will also be opened at all Overseas Missions for overseas Singaporeans and friends.
